Some Interior Improvements: What to Do If You Don’t Have a Foyer?

The entryway, or foyer, is the first thing people see when they enter your home. It’s the area where people get their first introduction to your style, and it’s the first part of your home that greets you after a long day.  It’s important for decorative reasons, but it’s also important for practical reasons. It’s where people remove their coats and shoes, it’s where you put your keys and where you drop the mail, and it’s where you gather yourself before you leave the house.

Many houses and apartments have designated entryways that are defined by architectural elements, but then there are those homes whose front doors open directly into the living room. If this is the case in your home fear not, you can still create the the illusion of a separate space and create a beautiful entryway for your home.

Use a Rug to Define the Space

Putting down an area rug is one of the easiest ways to define a space. In the case of a “faux” entryway you need something that will cover a big enough area without creeping into the rest of the room. Keep in mind also that you need somewhere that people can step with their dirty shoes and not step off and track dirt into the rest of the space. It needs to be big, but not too big. Ultimately this will be determined by the proportions in your home.

Decorate with Furniture

Every entryway needs a little bit of furniture. In some cases it’s a console table or desk, in others it’s a bench where people can sit and put on their shoes, and in some cases it’s both. When you don’t have a defined entryway it’s important to have something that will blend with the rest of the room, but it shouldn’t spill over and creep into the living area.

The furniture should be used to define the entryway space, so keep it small and practical. Make sure there’s somewhere to put your keys, the mail, and all those other little things that come into play when you come and go from your home.

Hang a Mirror

Hanging a mirror in an entryway is highly recommended for a couple of reasons.

One is that it’s nice to be able to do a last check of yourself before you leave the house, and the other is that it helps define the space and make it look bigger. A mirror hung over a desk or console table works beautifully.

Create an Accent Wall

An accent wall can be a fun way to define an entryway. Consider painting a portion of the wall around the door in a different color than the rest of the room. Depending on your style you can do something bold or something subtle. You can also try painting a pattern or even putting up wallpaper. And if you really want to define the space, frame the painted or wallpapered area with some moulding to separate it from the rest of the room.

Install Shelving

If the space is really limited try installing some floating shelves to separate the foyer from the rest of the room. When paired with a small area rug the space will instantly become defined. Sometimes one is enough, but if it works for your space consider installing a few, one on top of the other, in order to make the most of the space.
