How to Make Your Furniture Last Longer

How to Make Your Furniture Last Longer

Furniture can be an expensive investment. Even in a small home you need a certain amount in order to be comfortable and make your home look the way you want. But given the expense, you don’t want to have to replace it every few years. In order to make your furniture last as long as possible try to follow these tips.

Don’t Drag or Push Your Furniture

One of the worst things you can do to a piece of furniture is to drag it or push it across the floor.

Not only can it damage the floor, but doing so can cause the furniture joints to loosen and become damaged. If you have to move furniture lift it properly. For particularly heavy pieces like sofas, enlist the help of professionals if you can’t do it on your own.

Tighten the Joints Regularly

Even if your furniture rarely gets moved, general use can cause the joints to loosen over time.

Every now and then you should take the time to tighten any screws or other joints. Along with keeping your furniture clean, tightening loose joints is a part of general maintenance that will keep things in good shape so that they last longer.

Keep it Clean

Keeping your furniture free from dust, dirt and any kind of liquid will help to keep it looking good for years to come. Dust and dirt can cause tiny, barely-visible scratches that, over time, will make your furniture look dingy and faded. Also, if there is a spill be sure to blot it quickly to prevent stains and odors from setting. Stains and odours not only make furniture look and smell bad but in some cases they impact the texture of the furniture as well.

Use the Appropriate Cleaners

Always use the appropriate cleaner for the piece and avoid those labelled “all-purpose”. Upholstered pieces will require specific cleaners depending on the type of material (ie – leather vs wool vs cotton, etc.). Wood furniture will also require certain cleaners depending on the finish.

For example, some wood cleaners can scratch those that have a french polish on them. Always read the label and make sure you’ve got the right cleaner.

Keep It Out of the Sun

Direct sunlight can cause fabric-covered furniture to fade over time. If possible keep your furniture out of the way of the sun’s rays. In some rooms this is a tough thing to control, so the best way to combat the sun’s rays is to close the shades during peak daylight hours. There are plenty of window treatments available that block the sunlight while still allowing light to filter through so that you don’t have to sit in the dark.

Avoid Sources of Moisture

Moisture is enemy number one to all kinds of furniture (not to mention your home’s structure), causing it to rot and become mouldy over time. So do whatever you can to keep your furniture away from sources of moisture. If your home is damp use a dehumidifyer to remove excess moisture from the air. The cost of running the unit will be significantly less than the cost of replacing your furniture.

Buy the Best Quality You Can Afford

When it comes to buying furniture you should always buy the best quality you can afford (at least when it comes to major pieces). High-quality pieces will always be more expensive than their low-quality counterparts, but it’s a safe bet that they will last much longer if you take care of them.
